The CIBC Breast Assessment Centre (BAC) builds on a model that was developed at the Hamilton Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) Chedoke site beginning in 1991. Women with OBSP screen-detected abnormalities were seen in a weekly multidisciplinary clinic for diagnostic assessment by radiologists and/or surgeons. The philosophy was that all breast screening should be linked in an expedited fashion to organized diagnostic breast assessment.

The weekly assessment clinic was followed by Radiology/Pathology Correlation Rounds where radiologists, surgeons, pathologists and clinical staff would discuss radiology and pathology breast biopsy findings to determine a definitive diagnosis and next steps. The success of this model was foundational for Cancer Care Ontario’s OBSP Assessment Program launched a number of years later. 

The CIBC BAC opened on September 22, 2014 to provide full screening and diagnostic breast assessment services. The diagnostic services include access to care for four groups; individuals with screen-detected abnormalities, individuals with symptoms or concerns of breast cancer, individuals who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer and need ongoing screening surveillance, and individuals who are enrolled in the OBSP high risk screening program.

Through the leadership of its founding Director, Carol Rand, the team won the Cancer Quality Council of Ontario Award in 2015, and continues to improve the quality of services provided today.

The CIBC BAC was designed to improve the patient experience. The BAC is the recipient of two international awards and one Hamilton Architectural Award related to the design of the Centre that promotes a welcoming and supportive environment. The team at the BAC is grateful for the many individuals and donors who have been, and continue to be, committed to realizing a vision for a Centre of Excellence.
